Old Homestead
While hiking in the mountains of Northern California, about 20 miles south of the Oregon border came upon a beautiful alpine meadow. I discovered it once was a farmer's field. Located on the far end of the meadow was what was left of the old homestead. The house had long since rotted to the ground but the old well derrick is still standing. So was the corral. As I explored the area, couldn't help but wonder what happened to the people who once lived, loved and raised a family here. The song "Shifting Whispering Sands" kept going through my mind and the hackles on the back of my neck started standing up. As I looked out across the field, could almost see the old man with his mule, plowing the field. When I smelled bread baking, decided it was time leave.(I always get spooked when visiting these old places by myself) It is very interesting seeing places like this and realizing that folks who once lived there, helped make our great country.
