Fort Lewis Museum
Took a trip to the Fort Lewis Museum. The sun was bright and the weather hot. After wandering around the outside displays, went indoors to see the other things they had on display.The museum is laid out very well, beginning with the birth of Washington State. The only thing wrong is, everything is behind glass making it nearly impossible to get a good photo. Fort Lewis has a interesting history. The people of Pierce County decided they wanted a military base in their county so taxed themselves in 1917 and purchased the land and gave it to the Federal Government with the understanding the government would keep at least a division size force on it or the land would revert back to Pierce County. The museum is located in the last original building of 1917. It was build and staffed by the Salvation Army to serve the enlisted men of the time. After the Army took it over, it was used as Officer Quarters, Guest House (hotel, my mother stayed in it when she came up from Oregon to watch me graduate from basic training in 1956) and lastly a museum. If you get a chance to visit, it opens at 1200 hrs. Well worth a stop
