Captain Jack's StrongHold
MODOC INDIAN WAR 1873 In 1846 following the Applegate Emigrant Trail, white setters moved into the Klamath Valley to find it occupied by the Klamath, Yahooskin and Modoc Indians. So it was, it wasn’t long before the whites were stealing the Indians land and causing problems for the Indians. The government set up a reservation north of the valley and moved the Klamath and Yahooskins onto it without any problems but the Modoc held out until 1864. After years of conflicts with the white settlers, the old chief, Schonchin signs the treaty and moves his band onto the reservation. In 1870 with extreme hardships and clashes with their ancestral enemy, the Klamath’s, a young leader by the name of Kintpuash, known to the whites as Captain Jack, moved back to their homeland along the Lost River and demanded a reservation there. In 1872, the Army tried to arrest Capt. Jack and the other leaders. A small band of Modoc retaliates and under the leadership of Hooker Jim kills 14 settlers. The rest of the band canoes to the Lava Bed in December 1872 and hold off 600 soldiers until April 1873. The Indians believed if they could kill the leader of the Army, the soldiers would retreat. Capt. Jack didn’t like the idea but was shamed into sitting up ambush. During a peace talk, the Modoc attacked and killed Gen Canby and Rev. Thomas and wounded Agent Meachain. Once the soldiers cut off the water supply, the Indians disappeared into the Lava Beds. Later Captain Jack was captured and hang. The Modoc took the body and buried it is a secret place only known to them even today. General Canby was the only General killed during the American Indian War.
